What is the Student Director and Tech Program?

Starbound Theatre is dedicated to the theatre education of our students.  Our Student Directors and Techs will work with Starbound Staff in the following areas: backstage tech, costumes, make-up, stage management, assistant direction, props, sound/media, music and choreography.  Starbound Staff will mentor students as they gain the necessary skills to assist staff with various elements of our productions.

Students will learn the various skills of production management.  Each production student directors will be responsible for an assigned component of that production

What are the requirements of Student Directors and Techs?

Students commit to one year (September 2021 to July 31, 2022) of working as a Student Director or Tech. Students Ages 18 & under must participate in at least one production during the 2021-2022 season.

Student Directors will work on our season of shows.  Students should be prepared to attend rehearsals 1-2 times a week depending on the production and responsibility assigned, as well as biweekly (every other week) Student Director meetings. Student Directors and Techs will be expected to attend every tech rehearsal and performance for the shows they are assigned. Students will also be expected to attend most Starbound Staff production meetings.

Student directors will also select a special project to work on over the year. This can be as simple as producing a short play online (five minute musical or puppet show, etc), writing a play/musical and holding a staged reading, working a some type of public performance.  Starbound Staff will mentor students over the year to assist with development and completion of special project.

VOLUNTEER TRAINING PROGRAM

The Student Director Program is an unpaid training program.  Students will not be paid for attending student director meetings, working on Main Stage productions, and other projects like Solano Spotlight.

However, there will be limited positions for students ages 16+ to work on Jr Stage Productions and Creative ArtReach educational programs.  These would be paid positions with first preference given to Student Directors.  Students ages 15 and under can apply for limited unpaid positions on Jr Stage productions.  Students would qualify for a scholarship which would be paid at the end of the year or can be used towards future programs.
